And if any topic is appropriate for a blog, the topic of
babies it is. As many of you know, I’m 4.5 months pregnant with my last child.
I mean…my fourth child. I can’t help but focus on the fact that we are shutting
the reproduction factory for good after this go ‘round. It’s bittersweet,
really.
Nevertheless, in as little as a week, we’ll be able to stop
calling it, “it.”
Everyone is more excited about that than me. I suppose it’s
because this time, I truly don’t have a gender preference. I see pros having
either or. Or perhaps it’s because I cannot settle on a name.
Baby naming is not as easy as family tradition, religion,
ethnicity, and fad following. No…names matter. They make that first impression
before we ever appear in person. However challenging, it’s also fun. It’s a way
of imagining him or her in the future, having their name called out, coloring
it across a school folder.
I suppose, in a way, it’s the last indulgence; one more chance
to pretend that we control who they ultimately become.
If it’s a boy: If
it’s a girl:
Tripp Rivers
Jett Winter
Lake Piper
Rory Lorelei
I'm so curious: Which baby names are your favorites these
days? Do you care if a name is popular? How do you brainstorm names? Have you
known your names forever, or did it take you ages to pick? Do you secretly more
pets – just to get an opportunity to name the unnamed?
Do I see a Gilmore Girls trend, or am I making that up? I love Tripp and Lorelei! Enjoy your bit of "control." Jake and I were just talking the other day about how big of a responsibility it is to choose names. They have it forever! Haha.
ReplyDeleteHayley!! I was literally just thinking about you yesterday. I think I tweeted to you or something. I've slept since then and can't remember. Ha! I thought that too! Gilmore Girls! One day if we have one, and after we get married, Caleb wants to name our first boy "Friendly" I thought he was joking and laughed when he told me. But, since then as our friends have commented on it, the name has grown on me. But now reading this comment I am re-thinking that. Forever is a strong word. Haha!
DeleteMandi, I love all the names, but if we're voting. I would vote for Tripp and Piper (it makes me think of John Piper which makes me think "wisdom" because he knows the Word so incredibly well and what better to be wise about?) They are all great names though!
You DO see a Gilmore Girls trend. I could be brainwashed, for all I know. There was never a time when watching the show series that I intentionally thought "I'm going to name my future child(ren), Rory and Lorelei" -- they just appeared on my list one day.
DeleteFunny thing, however, my husband is not the biggest fan of those two names, as he has trouble pronouncing them. I think he prefers single syllables most. ,)
It's hard with names I think:) But my favorite is Isabelle...and that is the name of my daughter. I don't really have a favorite name for a boy. I like the name Lorelei that u have for an option if it's a girl by the way:)
ReplyDeleteI was also going to say I spy some Gilmore Girls too!!! I havent had a baby yet but I honestly like unique names. Granted when I first learn of a babies first name I might cringe thinking "really?" but then I think how unique it is. A name that isnt really common but at the same time a name they would be ashamed to have forever. Or even the fact of spell a common name a way that no one has done. Like Lorelei. The Gilmore Girls way is the only way I've known but I like your way. When my sister in law had three names to choose from she'd stand in the hall and yell out each name. Pretending she was calling the child. It actually worked :)
ReplyDeleteI love all the names on your lists - especially Jett, Lake and Winter. We are having such a hard time narrowing our list this time. With Kale, we settled on his name very early and it was really the first and only consideration - too easy! I can't wait until we find out the sex (should be in the next couple of weeks.....our due dates must be close) and I can at least focus on one list instead of two!
ReplyDeleteSince the day I began reading your blog, I instantly thought, "she's got a knack for names." Kale is so unique -- I just love it!
DeleteMy due date is February 6. Yours?
Gilmore Girls!! Of course! Congratulations on your new bundle of joy! Following you now via Bloglovin from the Let's Be Friends Hop.
ReplyDeleteYou're a jewel -- thank you!

You are too sweet! I will go take a look now. Thank you, thank you, thank you! XOXO
DeleteI love Rory, Piper and Lorelei. I'm a huge name nerd! I love reading about names and hearing the story behind why people got their name. My favourites right now are Amelia, Elisabeth, Peter & Josiah.
ReplyDeleteThose are beautiful names, Donna -- great taste!
DeleteCongratulations!
ReplyDeleteLove all your name choices, but especailly Tripp and Piper.
Either way, pick the one less popular at the time of birth.
Those two are my very favorites, also -- thank you for your suggestion!
DeleteI love the names Tripp, Rory, & Lorelei! I love the Gilmore Girls! :D
ReplyDeleteI have my names picked even though my hunny and I aren't even married yet. But yes sometimes it definitely is hard, my brother and SIL are having a hard time picking out a name for my future nephew.
With my name, it's unique and everyone pronounces it wrong and usually spells it wrong as well.
gorgeous names! wow! congratulations to you and your family! all the best!

Congratulations! My favorites on your lists are Tripp, Rivers, and Piper! My husband and I decided on Kellyn Cadence for our daughter's name before we even knew she was a girl. We had a very tough time agreeing on a name for our son though! We ended up loving the name Jude Tiernan. It's important to me for my children to have unique names, but there's definitely a line that shouldn't be crossed! There are too many cooky names out there these days!
ReplyDeleteI love the names! I've said since I was in high school, I wanted my future son to have the name Andrew James(James being the middle name obviously), I've always liked that pairing and my Grandpa was James, so there's that & then within the last few months I've fallen in love with the name Alexandra Adele(again middle name) for a girl.
ReplyDeleteOh love Piper that is super sweet.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the day for kids. Got the names all picked out ready to go with me choosing the girls name and the hubby with the boys. Everett William if a boy (or Ephraim William) and Grace Anya for a girl. Special meanings for both coming from family and russian family on his side.
Now just need the kid haha
Congratulations - and good luck with the name. At least you have 4 months to make that decision :)
love your blog too!
Those are all wonderful names. I LOVE the name Lorelei.
