After weeks of Christmas shopping I've concluded that gifts for pre-teens come in one of two categories:

Those that cost less than fifty bucks....these are cd's, dvd's, T-shirts, books, sketch pads, socks, underwear, and Fushigi.

Those that cost more than two hundred bucks....laptops, PS3's, iPod Touch, bicycles, and mopeds.

There is nothing in between.

Let's face it, unless it's cash, it's going to be a loser gift anyway.

It’s no secret I hate shopping in crowds more than I hate shaving my armpits. There are a million things I’d rather do than fight a horde of consumers in a mall. Things such as changing cat litter. Or breast feeding an angry wolverine.

So when I discovered Etsy.com, it was like the stars shone a little brighter and a choir of leprechauns started serenading me.

I’ve fallen down the Etsy rabbit hole and I can’t seem to claw my way back out. It’s a sickness, I tell you.

Tis the season of shopping. I mean, tis the season of giving. But since I’m far too talentless and too lazy to actually make things for the people I love, I’m stuck shopping.

You know what people don't do anymore? Drop in to see friends. No one just "stops in" for a quick visit.

You say: "But, I'm busy! We have a schedule! What about mah privacy!" etc.

It's a shame, really.

Though our house is usually a wreck, each weekend, I at least try to clean the kitchen (the main room of the house) so that it's ready for spontaneous visitors. (Note: if you've ever been over here and are feeling the need to disprove that, shut up.)

We have to get out of this habit of waiting until the stars align to have fellowship. Stop on by…because chances are, I will forget to invite you over tomorrow or next week, and then a year will have passed, and we’ll wonder why the other has new gray hairs and deeper crows feet since the last visit.

We create these black holes of busy-ness, and I easily got sucked into it. The end.

No clue what I've been doing, but it usually involves telling people shorter than I to do stuff they don't want to do. But it’s Christmas craft day at our house. Cookies will ensue. Pandora Christmas music. Peppermint candles make my house seem extra festive. The mound of presents under the tree intoxicating. The children suspiciously on good behavior. It’s going to be a good day.

“Keegan, why does your lunch bag smell like there might be chunks of brown, spoiled nastiness in there? How long has this food been in here?”

[Shrugs shoulders]

Famous quote, “I forgot.”

With two kids in school and a full time job, I don't make a habit of going through their backpacks every night. Obviously. They pull out their homework and any papers for me, I help them with their homework if they need it, I check it, I sign their homework journal, and they put everything back into the bag. I guess, from now on, I'll have to ask, "Do you have any homework? Do you have any papers for me? Do you have anything that needs to be signed? Do you have any spoiled food in your backpack?"

Inevitably, among the papers smooshed and mutilated at the bottom of their bags are also invitations to birthday parties. Being held tomorrow. Most times, the weekend passing.

Bailey made the front page of the Tomball version of the Chronicle this week, showing off her skills as an English rider at Saddlebrook Equestrian Center.  Here's my 9-year old wonderkid...

Birthdays…the upcoming holidays…it all has the potential to stress out even the coolest of chicks. It is my motto this year to “slow down and enjoy every minute of it.”  How to slow down one may ask?  Well take a deep breath and realize that this is all supposed to be fun and enjoyable.  There!  I said it!  Sometimes it may feel as if the maternal unit is responsible for the holidays and all it entails as we tend to hold our breath and try to ensure that magic is had by all.  Realistically, we can have the occasional sigh, and mumble words under our breath, but let’s consciously monitor our inclination to emit curse words….okay?  Okay!

Yet again another end to a long week…TGIF.  Kids home from school.  Backpacks thrown haphazardly in front of the door.  I’m sure they ran for the door at full speed, barging into the kitchen and eagerly lunged into the pantry for another piece of leftover Halloween candy .  I come home, reminding them for the umpteenth time to pick up bags and wash their grubby paws prior to their afternoon snack.  Rather, my kids, prefer introducing a conglomerate of bacteria into their digestive tracks for a mere sugar filled treat. Clean the litter box and take the trash out.  Feeling productive, I decide it’s time to take a load off, and I park my bumper on the chaise for a quick perusing through the mail.  The stress of the jam packed week is starting to melt away….Ahhh. I reason with myself that I should continue to complete several chores prior to uncorking a bottle of Cabernet to commemorate the end of the week. Rather, fell victim to temptation yet again.

I swear I don't pay him to write these for me!

I just wanted to take a minute to tell you how I feel about you since it is our monthly anniversary. I love you more thAn you know. You are my world, and I am so happy we took the next step and moved in.

The world goes round,
we all moved to a new town,
found a wonderful street,
some nice neighbors that you cant beat,
a wonderful girl that I will always love,
some great kids that will always be my bud,
You make my life so complete,
A once in a life love that no one can beat.

I thought we might catch him before he again fell off the wagon, but we may have been a day too late.  Scott Weiland went a little too ‘Scott Weiland’ during the concert on Sunday.  A display of erratic stage behavior…odd and confusing to say the least.  Nonetheless, he will go down in history as one of the best front men in the 90’s.

Here we are, however, all smiles...

I miss San Fran…well for the short time I was there -- the beauty is evident on every street, every corner. I miss all of the determined little weeds that grow through the sidewalks. The gorgeous graffiti art decorating an otherwise boring wall. And the amazing door numbers in the city.

Here’s our first gathering. A potluck. And I remember that Shayna had brought Tabouleh, and I thought what?!. I was just so happy to have a houseful of friends. Everyone eating, drinking, laughing. The record player spinning old tunes like Otis Redding. Lit candles flickering against smiling faces. Dogs underfoot, hoping for a handout.

My favorite was this sidewalk on Haight Ashbury. I loved it. Someone wrote: "Hey you, yes you walking. You are beautiful. Give thanx always."

Because here, everyone, even inanimate things have something to say.
